Oct 29 - Mountie Men Advance to Next Round with Solid 2-0 Blanking of North Rockland

(Suffern, NY) - The Varsity Boys (#6 seed) opened the Sectional playoffs with a strong message and convincing win over rival North Rockland by a 2-0 score.  This was the third time the Mounties beat North rockland during the season and has eliminated them from the tournament.  The game was played in chilly evening conditions in front of a crowd of approximately 200 spectators on the turf field at Suffern Middle.

In the first half play was solid all around and Charlie Pirc found the net after an Eric Garcia pass to create a 1-0 Suffern lead.  The defense for the Mounties played exceptionally well with numerous clears via headers and Sean Raible, Adam Golden and Mike Sahler limited the work that keeper Matt Levius had to do.  In the second half Charlie did it again this time fed by Marty Paljusevic. Charlie streaked down the left side and hit a rocket passed the goalie that caught the far right side of the net.

Suffern will play John Jay Cross River on Tuesday Oct 31 at Suffern. Time and field will be determined sometime tomorrow!

Oct 29 - Lady Lions Claw to the End but Fall to Scarsdale 2-1 in Opening Round of the Sectionals

(Scarsdale, NY ) - The Varsity Girls saw their 'Close the Gap' season finally end with a tough loss to Scarsdale in Sunday afternoon play.  It was another game against an opponent that had previously dominated play against them and had kept them off the boards but just like the season-opening Pearl River Tournament the Lions were out to reverse that trend.

The first half ended scoreless as the Mounties fought strong head winds but made the big clearing plays.  The Blue Wall Defense led by Cara Goldman and Alanna Fisher along with Jen De Nicola and Jessica Stecker found ways time and time again to clear the ball from the zone and keeper Steph Reimer made several excellent saves to keep it close.  Sasha Clynes moved to left mid-field and worked hard to keep the Raiders leader scorer in check throughout the half.  Tricia Bova, Besarta Tanushaj and Kate Wolfe worked the offense zone hard and a Rebecca Ravenna blast at the 17 minute mark was their best chance in the first half to break through.

The Mounties opened the second half with the wind at their backs and at the 10 minute mark a Besarta right side corner kick was aptly re-directed into the net by Rebecca Ravenna despite 7 Raiders being in the box for a big 1-0 Suffern lead.  That score held up through most of the remainder of the half with Senior Kelly Durkin playing stopper and Danielle Lahm marking key strikers on defense.  In one of the most exciting plays of the year a Raiders pass was deflected off the knees of Tricia Bova hard and high and she turned it into a breakaway and soared a high arcing shot on goal that just trickled by the far left post for what would have been a game breaker.  Moments later the Raiders slipped a pass by the defense at the 31 minute mark to tie the game at 1-1.  In the closing 2 minutes of the game Scarsdale managed a centering pass that was headed in by a charging Raider player to make it 2-1 and the season of hope was on the line.  A last minute pass from Kate Wolfe to Rebecca Ravenna just missed connecting to tie the game and for the second straight year the Lions fell to Scarsdale in the Sections.  The team left it all on the field and for the second straight year the hopes for higher goals for next season are set.

These 5 Lady Lions have seen tremendous and significant improvement in the team in their 4 years at Suffern and are a big factor in the current team's success.  It will be difficult to picture them not on the field in 2007 but the whole team and coaching staff as well as the Booster Club wishes them the very best as they advance in their studies when they leave SHS in the spring and appreciate their contributions to make Suffern Soccer strong.

Oct 26 - Girls Sectional Seedings; North Rockland Nabs the Top seed in Class AA

Reigning Class AA champion and state finalist North Rockland lost once all year, which was good enough to earn it the top seed in the Section 1 girls soccer tournament and an opening-round bye.

Rival Ketcham is the No. 5 seed because of two losses and two ties. It hosts No. 12 Mahopac, which accounted for one of those ties on Sept. 28. Ketcham's lower-than-expected seed means it would meet North Rockland in a semifinal instead of repeating last season's final rumble.

No. 11 Suffern will try to avenge its 2-0 loss to No. 6 Scarsdale in the first round last year.  The game is at Scarsdale at 2 PM on SUNDAY Oct. 29th.  Suffern improved two spots from their 2005 seeding at #13.  Suffern and North Rockland are the only two Rockland teams to advance to the sectionals.

Oct 24 - Varsity Girls Close the Gap but Fall to North Rockland 4-2 in Finale

(Suffern, NY) - Coach Corini's pre-season goal to close the gap with North Rockland finally came true in the Varsity Girl's closing game of the regular season.  After falling behind on an early Red Raider goal, the Mounties (9-7-2 overall, 5-2-1 in league) shocked North Rockland when at the 10 minute mark of the first period, Kate Wolfe, moved up to mid-field, picked off in mid-air a Catrina del Gais corner kick and re-directed it to the upper part of the goal to knot the score at 1-1.  A penatly kick by del Gais a few minutes later unfortunately went wide but at the 17 minute mark Suffern pressure in the box allowed Sasha Clynes to draw a hand ball on the Raiders and she calmly deposited the second penalty kick for the Lady Lions just inside the far left post.  Suffern led the perennial powerhouse Red Raiders for the first time in a long time but North Rockland was able to tie it at 2-2 at the 32 minute mark on an oddly officiated play.  North Rockland picked up its 3rd goal in the closing moments of the first half when a header to clear a pass bounced off an offensive player and got past the diving keeper Steph Reimer for a clear shot on goal.

In the second half Suffern played hard and Steph Reimer put on a show with several acrobatic saves to keep the score close.  A final minutes goal by North Rockland ended the scoring but they left knowing the gap was closed and future games vs. Suffern will be very tough.  Coach Corini made several position changes to have alternatives in the sectionals and Alanna Fisher played an excellent game in her first tour on defense with several diving tackles and clears.

Oct 23 - Varsity Boys Smother South with 8-1 Turf Win

(Suffern, NY) - The Mountie Men made their Seniors proud as they played under the lights and coasted to an 8-1 win over visiting Clarkstown South.  The box score is below and shows another outstanding game from Dennis Cordoba with 2 goals while the Paljusevics keep the sibling rivalry in order with a pair of goals each with Marty adding 3 assists.  Seby Trotta captured the league scoring title with his 12th of the year while Andre Napoli also found the net.  Matt Levitus and Matt Trauner split time in the nets as the team collected its' 11th win overall for the year and first place in League B.

Seedings for the sectionals come out late Wed.  Eric Garcia and Marty Paljusevic tied for the league lead in assists, with Dennis Cordoba right behind them in third.  The Mountie Men also led the league in goals for as well as with their defense in fewest goals against.  A superb effort all around.

Box Score: Suffern 8,  Clarkstown South 1.

Oct 24 - JV Girls Lose to North Rockland 3-0

(Suffern, NY) - The JV Girls continued to play hard but fell to the Red Raiders junior squad by a 3-0 score.  With some lineup changes by Coach Swalm the team seemed to play well despite giving up some goals.  Lauren Fleischer played left striker, Kelsey Rehain was at left midfield, Arielle Clynes was at center mid and Anna Ohara had left stopper.  Keeper Nicole Devivo had an amazing game again in the losing cause.

Oct 23 - JV Boys Cap Stellar Season with a 2-0 Victory Under the Lights

(Suffern, NY ) - The JV Boys ended their regular season in style with a crisp 2-0 win over the Vikings. The team ended the regular season at 13-2  and are going strong into the playoffs this coming Friday.  Their 9th shutout was another strong defensive effort all around.    With some 45 spectators watching on the sidelines of the new turf lower field the teams ended the first half scoreless 0-0.

Finally the Mounties pressure paid off in the second half and at the 19 minute mark Alex Immerman blasted a low line drive from the 18 yard line that the South goalie gloved but was unable to stop due to the velocity and the Mounties led 1-0.   Suffern kept the pressure on and 2 minutes later Steve Johnson was able to drove a power shot into the upper left corner of the net for their second goal.  Keeper Charlie Laduca made several outstanding saves including one in the closing minutes on a corner kick with a high leap to prevent a re-direct on a header.

Oct 23 - Varsity Girls Fall To Scarsdale 2-0

(Scarsdale, NY) - The Lady Lions (9-6-2 overall) saw their 3-game winning streak come to an end with a loss to conference power-house Scarsdale by a score of 2-0 in afternoon play.  The team trailed at half time 1-0 before giving up a second goal in the 2nd period.

The team closes out the regular season on Tuesday Oct 24th with Seniors Day at SHS and will play league rival North Rockland.

Oct 21 - A Perfect 10!  Mountie Men's 10th Win of the Season is a 6-0 Gem over North Rockland

(Garnerville, NY) - After a slip vs. Ramapo on Thursday the Mountie Men were looking to re-establish their reputation as league leaders and playing the Red Raiders was the perfect opponent to do so.  A balanced attack by the offense of 3 first half and 3 second half goals sent the message while the defense and keeper Matt Levitus (12 saves) notched its 5th shutout of the season.  Matt Trauner also spent time in the nets and picked up 3 saves.  It was an exclamation point in league play as their record moved to 6-1-1 in League B while their overall record moved to a respect worthy 10-4-1.

For Seby Trotta the game was a showcase as he picked up a hat trick with 3 goals and widened his league lead in scoring to 11 goals on the year.  Evan Shreck (1 goal, 1 assist) and Marty Paljusevic (1 goal, 1 assist) were equally impressive on the day.  Senior Adam Golden made it a memorable day with 3 assists while Robert Kawasaki also found the back of the net for a goal.  Eric Garcia, already a league leader in assists, added another one on the day.

The team faces Clarkstown South on Monday.

Oct 21 - Lady Lions Look Fine with Win #9; Top Saunders 6-0 Under the Lights

(Suffern NY) - The Varsity Girls remain undefeated under the lights (3-0) and wrapped up their 3rd straight shutout with a trouble-free blanking of visiting Saunders.  The team advanced to 9-5-2 overall and have now improved on last year's record and ensured a winning season; two goals set from the beginning of 2006 play.

Like the Boys, the Girls had 3 first and 3 second half goals.  The scoring came from the usual as well as some new faces.  Sasha Clynes (1 goal, 1 assist) netted her 12th goal of the year, while Catrina del Gais blasted in two and Tricia Bova (1 goal, 1 assist) also chipped one in.  Those three currrently sit 3rd, 4th and 5th in overall League B scoring.  Rebecca Ravenna collected her 3rd goal of the year while Gayle Garbus netted her first this year.   Jenny De Nicola and Senior Kelly Durkin each contributed an assist on the evening while Martina Kaldany also picked up her first assist of the year in second half action.

Steph Reimer and Julie Jefferson split time as keepers but had little trouble with the few shots on goal that came their way.    Rebeccah Stevens and Amy Coakley along with Brittany Schwartz played well in 2nd half action.

The team faces two tough opponents to close out the regular season:  @ Scarsdale on Monday and North Rockland at SHS on Tuesday.

Oct 19 - The Lady Lions Qualify for Sectionals with 4-0 Win over E. Ramapo

(New Hempstead, NY) - The Varisty Girls will advance to the Sectionals for the second straight year thanks to their 4-0 victory against East Ramapo.    It was the team's 2nd straight shutout and 6th of the year and advanced their record to 8-5-2 overall and 5-1-1 in League play.

Catrina del Gais, Sasha Clynes and Tricia Bova all collected goals and Besarta Tanushaj picked up two assists to add to their totals for the year and  remain in the top section of league leaders in scoring.  Stephanie Fauchere picked up her first goal of the year while Cara Goldman played mid-field for part of the game and also collected her first assist of the year to complete the scoring for the Mounties.

The team plays Saunders under the lights on Saturday at SMS.

Oct 19 - JV Boys Top East Ramapo 6-0 for win #12

(Suffern, NY) -   The JV team beat Ramapo 6-0 yesterday to move to 12-2 on the season.  Goals were scored by Mike Raible, who also had three assists, Mike Singer, Mario Frascone, Pete Zelem, and Kyle Stanley and Mario Allegra. The defense played well as they do every game and racked up another shutout (#8).

Oct 19 - JV Girls Master E. Ramapo 4-1

(Suffern, NY) -  JV Girls returned to the win column with a 4-1 victory over East Ramapo. The goals were scored by:

  • Catherine Mitts in traffic in front of the net
  • Ariel Clynes off an assist from Kelsey Rehain
  • Kelly Moresi on a breakway
  • Jen Clayton
Coach Swalm decided to shake things up and moved all the positions around for the game so they all played every position.   Ariel Clynes played goalie in the last 8 minutes and had a save on a penalty kick.

Oct 11 - Varsity Girls Slide to a 3-3 tie vs. Clarkstown South

(Suffern, NY) - The Lady Lions (6-5-2 overall) ended in a 3-3 tie vs. rivals from Clarkstown South in wet afternoon play at SHS.  The Mounties got on the board first with an early goal from Sasha Clynes off a Kate Wolfe assist and then dominated play for over 20 minutes with repeated shots on goal but to no avail.  The Vikings took advantage of a defense lapse and tied it 1-1 and then minutes later took a 2-1 lead as the rain continued to fall.

But the Lady Lions came out strong in the 2nd half and scored less than two minutes in with another Sasha Clynes goal as the team worked the ball around and an eventual feed from Besarta Tanushaj to Sasha who was able to beat the goalie on the left side using the defender as a screen.  Then at the 8 minute mark in the 2nd half Alanna Fisher made a nice sliding goal off a Sasha pass and the Mounties led 3-2.    But the Vikings managed to tie it back up again within a few minutes through some dogged pursuit in the wet turf.   At the 15 minute mark into the 2nd half both coaches felt the conditions were too unsafe and the risk of an injury was high and so the officials called the game at that point as a tie.

The team's next opponent is a home night game next Tuesday Oct 17 against Clarkstown North.

Oct 11 - JV Girls Fall to South in a Downpour 4-2

(Suffern, NY) - The JV Mountie Girls played well and hard but fell to Clarkstown South in rainy Wed. play at SHS by a score of 4-2.  Suffern's first goal was off a nice pass from Alix Sadowski to Jen Clayton who powered it home.  The Mountie's other goal was actually put in by a South defender while Suffern also suffered the same fate for one of the Vikings four goals against.  Ariel Clynes, Kelsey Rehain and Lianna Quinn played well in mid-field for the day.

Oct 11 - Varsity Boys Blank Clarkstown South 4-0

(West Nyack, NY) - The Mountie Men (8-2-1 overall) got the job done with a well played 4-0 blanking of the Vikings in Wed. afternoon play in West Nyack.  Evan Shreck led the attack with 2 goals while Marty Paljusevic and Alex Cruz each had a goal.  All goals came in the first half.   Dennis Cordoba and Eric Garcia each picked up 2 assists on the day while Keeper Matt Levitus notched another shutout.  The Varsity increased their League B first place standing with 15 points with North trailing in second place with 12.

Oct 11 - JV Boys Top South 4-0; Beat North Rockland 1-0 in last week play

(West Nyack, NY) - The JV Boys delivered a solid blanking and victory over the South Vikings by a 4-0 score and matched the Varsity's result.  All players saw action in the rain-filled contest.

Jin Woo scored early in the first half on a penalty kick.    Kyle Stanley chipped in a shot off a pass from Mario Allegra. Jin Woo added another unassisted goal.  To round out the scoring  the fourth goal was contributed by Mike Singer who scored with a rocket shot to the upper 90 from the left side of the goal.  The defense again played stellar pitching a shutout for the 2nd consecutive game.  Victor Cruz, Zach Stoller, Mario Frascone, Matt Leone and Keeper Charles Laduca all played exceptional.

In late news, the JV Boys also beat North Rockland in the second leg of a home and home last week by a score of 1-0.  The lone goal was scored by a Zac Croce header off a beautifully sent in ball from Mike Raible.  The defense once again played stellar securing the clean sheet.

Oct 3 - Varsity Girls Win a 1-0 Thriller in Double OT over Clarkstown North

(New City, NY) - A perfectly executed curling corner kick by Besarta Tanushaj with less than 20 seconds to go in the 2nd OT was nicely headed in the net by Catrina del Gias to give the Lady Lions (4-4-1 overall) an exciting win over cross-county rivals Clarkstown North.

The first half was scoreless with neither team showing much offense although Suffern controlled the play and had a variety of chances including a direct kick outside the box from Alanna Fisher that went wide. The second half was much the same although in the closing moments of regulation a Kate Wolfe to Besarata Tansushaj to Sasha Clynes series of passes almost netted a Mountie score with less than a minute to go.

The teams battled even again in the first OT period and the 2nd OT was coming to the end until Besarta rushed to the left corner as time was running out and sailed her crossing shot to Catrina (current leading scorer for the Mounties) who fought through traffic to create the winner.

Stephanie Reimer was once again solid in goal and with the Mounties Blue Wall defense notched their 3rd shutout of the year. The win stopped a 4 game slide for the Mounties who face Ramapo at home on Thursday Oct 5.

Oct 3 - JV Girls Fall to Clarkstown North 2-1

(New City, NY) - The JV Girls fought hard but ended 1 goal short vs. the C. North Rams in Tuesday afternoon play. Lauren Fleisher got the solo Mountie goal off a nice pass from Kelsey Rehain. Kelly Moressi and Ariel Clynes each had a strong game and Keeper Nicole DeVivo kept the score close for the Lady Lions with some fine saves.

Oct 3 - JV Boys Split Last 4 games

The JV Boys have a record of 2-2 in their last 4 games. The team defeated Carmel 3-0 on goals by Kyle Stanley, Sean Hechler and Mike Raible. They lost to Mamaroneck 2-1 with the only goal by Steve Johnson and then lost a close 1-0 contest to Arlington. The team played well in defeat.

To add to the Suffern dominance of Clarkstown North on Tuesday the JV Boys beat North 5-2 with solo goals being scored by Jin Woo Lee, Alex Immerman, and Pete Zelem. Zac Croce led the way with 2 goals, one of them as he beat 5 defenders. It was a world class goal. Mike Raible led the team with 2 assists.

Sep 25 - Varsity Boys Fall to Westlake 5-3

(Suffern, NY) The game was played at Suffern HS. Approximately 150 spectators were on hand.
FIRST HALF: Westlake came out and scored first at the 2:10 mark. The score was 3-1 in favor of Westlake at the half. It could have easily been Suffern 3-1 with the missed open goal opportunities.
SECOND HALF: Suffern came back and tied the game 3-3. Suffern out shot Westlake 12 - 4 in the second half, but couldn't capitalize. Westlake made the best of their 4 shots with two goals.

Sep 21 - Varsity Girls Lose to North Rockland 2-0

(Thiells NY) - The Varsity Girls lost to the North Rockland Red Raiders 2-0 on Thursday afternoon.  The game was fast paced and again Goalie Steph Reimer made a variety of excellent saves to keep the game close.  The entire team worked the field and the defense pushed aside many scoring chances for North Rockland.  Trailing 1-0 at half time the Mounties gave some strong chances to tie it but eventually gave up a 2nd goal and moved to 3-2-1 overall.
