Oct 29 - Lady Lions Bow to Yorktown 4-1 in Windy Affair; An Abrupt End to a Season of Growth

(Yorktown Heights) - The Varsity Girls (8-7-1 overall) saw their unbeaten streak in 5 games come to an end as the Yorktown Huskers took their first round match by a 4-1 score.  Yorktown opened scoring early at the 15 minute mark but the Mounties responded less than 4 minutes later on a terrific pass from Besarta Tanushaj to Sasha Clynes who rocketed it in the left corner of the net.  The half ended a fitting 1-1 however the Lions had the wind advantage for the start and thus opened the 2nd half with the wind picking up in force in their face.  They began to see their long passes fade against the wind.  Yorktown siezed the help and at the 8 minute mark the Husker's top 21-goal scorer Samantha Russo picked up one of her 3 goals on the day.  Russo deposited a rebound for a goal shortly later and with 11 minutes left a long shot that was heading wide right ended up sneaking inside right post due to the high cross wind.  The Lady Lions made a last effort to score and a Catrina del Gais blast hit the cross bar and the rebound shot by Tanushaj was stopped by the Yorktown keeper ending the Mounties chance to move closer.

The Girls had a fine season with improvement in many areas that will be listed in further web site updates.

Oct 29 - Sectional Blues:  Varsity Boys Fall to Clarkstown North 3-2 in Intense Match

(Suffern, NY) - The Mountie Men (12-5-0 overall) saw a much early exit in the playoffs than hoped for after an all-out battle with the visiting North Rams.  The Mounties came out and dominated the play in the first half but it ended scoreless.  In the second period the play became more intense.  Yellow cards and fouls were becoming more prevalent and helped lead to the first goal. Suffern was able to break through first at the 6 minute mark on a direct kick from Alex Cruz that caught the inside of the left post through the screen setup by the players.  But North was able to answer 5 minutes later when a similar opportunity presented itself but this time the Rams chose to pass around the wall to an open cutter who notted the score at 1-1.  Unfortunately the Rams used the momentum and less than 3 minutes later scored on a give-and-go with a solid cross pass and blast that also eluded keeper Matt Trauner.  North led 2-1.

Then the game changed dramatically at the 21 minute mark.  North recieved a red card for a vicious hit on Charlie Pirc.  With a man advantage the Mounties made a press to score but North was able to mount an upfield attack and an accidental goal made it 3-1 favor of Clarkstown less than one minute into the man advantage.  The Mounties did not give up and pressed hard and an Alex Garcia rebound was rammed home by Charlie Pirc to bring the score to 3-2.  Unfortunately the Mounties received a red card at the 12 minute mark when a North player went down and the advantage was lost.

In the closing minutes several strong scoring chances were thwarted by the Rams keeper Eric Gioseffi who had 9 saves on the night.  Suffern's Matt Trauner made 5 saves.

We will recap the Varsity Boys season including their League B title in upcoming updates.

Oct 22 - Varsity Girls Finish Regular Season Strong; Defeat South 5-1

(Suffern, NY) - First the Lady Lions (8-6-1 overall, 6-2 league) saluted their 12 graduating Seniors who were playing at home for the last time.  Then they went on to dispatch the visting Clarkstown South Vikings by a 5-1 score as a tune-up for the upcoming Section 1 Playoffs.  Their planned Tuesday game with Scarsdale was canceled by Scarsdale due to qualifying make-up games that conflicted and so the regular season has ended.

The team opened up strong with the starting field being all seniors, with the exception of Junior keeper Steph Reimer.  Less than 6 minutes in midfielder Catrina del Gais highlighted the crowd with a spin move at the 20 yard line and a power left foot kick that found the back of the net.  But the Vikings pressed on and at the 19 minute mark scored themselves.  The half ended 1-1.

Coach Corini turned up the heat for the next half and went full out with his starting regulars and they responded nicely with a 4 goal outburst in 8 minutes of play.  It started with a long outlet pass from defense captain Cara Goldman to a streaking Sasha Clynes who had a 1:1 breakway and beat the goalie on the right side. Besarta Tanushaj deposited a Clynes rebound a few moments later and then Martina Kaldany tucked in a loose ball for a 4-1 lead.  Del Gais rounded out the scoring with another long blast with 12 minutes to go and then the defense secured away the rest of the game.

Oct 20 - Soccer Extravanga Night A Success - Suffern Teams Go Unbeaten

(Suffern, NY)  - The Suffern Soccer program made the most of the chance to display its skills and depth with four games under the lights at the SMS complex on Saturday.  The results were impressive with 3 teams winning and the 4th ending in a 1-1 tie after two well played overtime periods.  The Suffern Soccer Booster Club also turned out in force and sold food, apparel and drinks for over $1,100 in receipts for the evening.  Congratulations to the teams for their hard play and for the volunteers that manned the tables during the night.   Details on each game to follow below.

The play was intense in the Boy's 2-0 win over Pine Bush.

Oct 20 - Varsity Boys Make a Statement; Defeat Pine Bush 2-0

(Suffern, NY) - The Mountie Men (11-3-0 overall) sent a message to the Sectional seeding committee with a solid 2-0 win over Pine Bush in Saturday evening play.  With Coach Walkley out of town, Asst. Coach Callanan filled in quite nicely and the team came out ready to play for the start and pressed and controlled the action.  Finally at the 31 minute mark Charlie Pic took a long pass and sped down the left sideline and rocketed a kick over the Pine Bush goalie who tipped it but not high enough and the ball settled in under the cross bar.   A second goal was added just before the half by Evan Shreck after dogged pursuit and play in front of the goal.  Eric Garcia and Evan Kwilecki added assists on the two goals.

Goalie Matt Trauner had 9 saves in getting another shutout and his defense kept the tough shots away during the match. This is the 8th win in a row for the Varsity Boys who finish the regular season at C. South on Tuesday.

Oct 20 - Lady Lions Play Well and Long; Tie Edgemont 1-1

(Suffern, NY) - The Suffern Varsity Girls (7-6-1 overall) played exciting and non-stop soccer for 100 minutes vs. the visiting Edgemont Panthers. When the second overtime buzzer sounded they walked off a little frustrated but proud of the overall effort since Edgemont entered the game with a 9-2-2 record.  The Ladies controlled play from the onset and shortly after Alanna Fisher hit the cross bar a series of shots and passes finally paid off and Stephanie Fauchere took the rebound of a Besarta Tanushaj shot and popped one past the Edgemont keeper at the 32 minute mark in the first half.

Play was even in the 2nd half until an unlucky Mountie clearing pass was re-directed to Edgemont striker Molly Orden who was slicing between defenders and was able to have a clear angle on goalie Steph Reimer.  Orden scored to knot it up with 25 minutes to go in the 2nd half.  In both overtimes Suffern had excellent chances to put it away with the most dramatic chance coming in the closing minutes off a Catrina del Gais cross to Tanushaj who headed it off the left post.  The rebound came to Steph Fauchere who poked it towards the net only for the Edgemont keeper to make another outstanding save; one of the 17 she had on the night.

Keeper Reimer made her critical saves in the opening 15 minutes and ended with 8 saves on the night.

Senior Sasha Clynes started the team off on the right foot early with a perfectly placed goal off a excellent pass from fellow Senior Stephanie Fauchere. The remainder of the first half saw more even play and a 1-0 halftime Suffern Blue lead.  The Mounties stepped up play in the 2nd half at after numerous chances finally broke through.  For the second time in 24 hours, Junior Besarta Tanushaj headed in a goal off a corner kick with this time the kick coming from Fauchere for her second assist of the game.  Tanushaj has raised her game to a new level in the recent weeks and closed out the scoring with a terrific move for her second 2-goal in as many days with 14 minutes to go inthe game.

Keeper Reimer and the defensive back line of Goldman/Rehain/Wolfe/DeNicola played well again for the consecutive shutout while several different stoppers (Ravenna, Schwartz, Stevens, Coakley) also played contributed nicely to the effort.  Alanna Fisher and Catrina del Gais kept the offense pace in the 2nd half.and Catrina del Gais controlled midfield play well and kept South off balance throughout.  Slideshow to follow on weekend.

The play was chippy from the start with many fouls; some called, some not.  The Mounties dominated first half action and Besarta Tanushaj broke the scoreless tie for a 1-0 half time lead with a terrific header goal off a nice crossing corner kick from Kate Wolfe.  In the second half the offense continued pressure and at the 12 minute mark, Tanushaj got a pass from Sasha Clynes and blasted a long drive from the 18 that found the back of the net for a solid 2-0 lead.  The entire team contributed to the win with offensive pressure, strong midfield play, continued excellence from the defense back line and good goaltending.

The defense played exceptional for the clean sheet, led by keeper Zach Levitus, and Alex Tonneli, Pete Zelem, Jared Roth and Sean Hechler who all played well.

Oct 13 - Varsity Girls Fall to North Rockland 3-0; Show Strong 2nd Half Defense

(Haverstraw, NY) - The Lady Lions (4-6 overall, 2-2 league) opened strong and almost netted a goal with less than one minute to play in Saturday action vs. the Red Raiders, who entered the game ranked #11 in Class AA in New York state.  Sasha Clynes low twisting shot bounced off the goalie but the open net was elusive.  Several other good scoring chances in the first ten minutes also occurred for Suffern Blue but a perfectly executed long cross allowed North Rockland to score first at the 11 minute mark.  At the 32 minute mark the Red Raiders converted again and the Lady Lions trailed at half 2-0.

In the 2nd half North Rockland dominated possession but the Mounties defense, led by many spectacular plays from Keeper Steph Reimer, kept the high scoring Raiders from many additional scores.  A questionable onside led to the final Raiders goal 8 minutes into the 2nd half but from there Cara Goldman, Jen Denicola, Kelsey Rehain and Kate Wolfe kept several All-Section players at bay the remainder of the game.  Catrina del Gais played strong at mid-field throughout.

(Suffern, NY) - The Varsity Girls (4-5- Overall, 2-1-0 League) showed discipline and focus as they moved closer to the .500 mark again with a solid win over North at the SMS complex.  The teams were even during the first 10 minutes with a few good scoring chances there for North but then the Mounties began to put together strong ball control and offensive chances.  Eventually Catrina del Gais converted a shot, showing excellent determination and agility, as she pushed through a defender and beat the goalie at the 25 minute mark to give Suffern a 1-0 lead at the half.

In the 2nd period Besarta Tansuhaj, Sasha Clynes and Steph Fauchere had several good scoring attempts but at the 14 minute mark Alanna Fisher got loose at mid field, dribbled in without being touched and powered a high shot from 25 yards out into the top right side of the net for a 2-0 Suffern lead.

The defense played very well with Cara Goldman being teamed up with Kate Wolfe, who returned to the back line for the first time this year, and Brittany Schwartz who continues to make havoc as a stopper.   Kelsey Rehain and Jenny deNicola showed both aggressiveness and control while Keeper Steph Reimer was solid once again.  A late goal by North at the 2 minute mark broke the shutout but all in all a strong team win.
