Sep 29 - The Lady Lions Scoring Drought Continues; Outscored by Mamaroneck 3-0

(Mamaroneck, NY) - The Varsity Girls (2-4-0 overall) posted another tough loss, this time at Mamaroneck.   The game was very physical from the outset with Keeper Steph Reimer getting fouled and hit twice early.  Jule Jefferson played goal for 10 minutes to spell a banged-up Reimer in the first half while Kate Wolfe also had to go to the sidelines in the first half after receiving a foul.  After falling behind 1-0 at the 25 minute mark, the team stiffened but a re-directed corner kick with 2 minutes to go in the first half made it a 2-0 score at the break.  In the closing moments a direct kick from Junior Besarta Tanushaj sailed high over the cross bar.  Despite numerous chances in the 2nd half, the team did not convert a tally.

The team hosts North Rockland on Monday Oct 1st at SHS in the begin of League B (county) play.

The defensive play of Cara Goldman, Britney Schwartz and Kelsey Rehain kept the ball in Saunders end throughout the game.  Keeper Julie Jefferson patroled the goal in the 2nd half and the rest of the team also performed very well to make it a complete victory.

Sep 7 - Lohud Preview - Mounties Expect to Keep Winning

By RODERICK BOONE
THE JOURNAL NEWS

(Original publication: September 6, 2007)

They weren't given much of a chance by some. Yet there they were, playing against Arlington for the sectional Class AA boys soccer title, taking a spot some thought was reserved for White Plains or possibly Poughkeepsie.

Even though they lost to the Admirals, the eventual state champions, the Suffern Mounties turned out to be better than the so-called experts thought. The players, though, knew all along they had it in them.

"The whole year, we knew what we were capable of doing," senior Evan Shreck said.

And they already know what they are capable of doing this year, given they have 11 returnees from a team that went 14-5-1 and knocked off second-seeded Poughkeepsie in the sectional semifinals before taking Arlington down to the wire.

"I think our chances are pretty good this year," senior goalie Matt Trauner said. "We have a ton of returning players, great chemistry, and our captains, they are really pushing our goal of winning a championship."

As they prepare for what they hope is a championship run, the players spent plenty of time over the last 10 months getting ready. About 85 percent of the players attended the offseason weightlifting program coach Bob Walkley organized.

"I think that will help us out this year," Shreck said.

They lifted two days a week, and afterward did agility and speed drills, climbing ladders and such. They even showed up nearly two nights per week in the summer, playing a few pickup games and leading Walkley to believe they are serious about making another strong postseason run.

"It's my fourth year," Walkley said. "And it's taken me four years to get them to mold into my ideas of what you need to compete for in this AA bracket.

"They are not only hungry, but they seem to be focused."

And together.

While there's a good possibility the overall skill level on this year's roster might be better than what it had in 2006, the biggest thing with this crop appears to be their cohesiveness.

Suffern hasn't even played a game, but the team unity is already distinguishable among the players.

"The talent might be better, but even more so than the talent is the chemistry," Trauner said. "The juniors have been playing together since they were children and they are mixing in well with the seniors. The team chemistry is absolutely amazing right now. Last year was great, but this year is even better."

Ah, words the Mounties hope ring true at the end of the season. But if that's going to happen, Suffern is going to have to find a variety of ways to win, especially when it comes to taking on some of the bigger, tougher squads in the ultra-competitive Class AA.

"I'm not sure if we can physically match with some people," Walkley said. "But the team is definitely going to be an exciting team.
"

Sep 6 - Suffern Varsity Boys Scrimmage in Fine Fashion

(Suffern, NY) - Suffern Varsity Boys showed why they are ranked number one in the league heading into the season openr this Saturday vs. Arlington.  The team looked impressive in both of its scrimmages at the Novotny Scramble on Wednesday and Thursday.  On Wednesady they fell behind early but then rallied and dominated for a 3-1 win versus a strong Tappan Zee team.   They followed that with an even more overwhelming effort with a 5-0 blanking of Spring Valley.

Senior Evan Shreck gets off a low shot to the goalie's short side for the 2nd goal in Suffern's 3-1 win over TZ at the Novotny Scramble on Wed. Sep. 5th.

Sep 6 - Varsity Girls Fall 2-1 to New Rochelle at the Scramble

(Suffern, NY) - The Lady Lions opened up their scrimmage against New Rochelle with a strong first half in ball control but eventually fell behind 2-0.  For the Mounties the game seemed to be about what might have been: a header against the cross bar was followed by a fine diving save by the New Rochelle goalie to thwart their two best chances in the half and moments later an empty net shot sailed high.   A late 2nd half goal by Suffern closed the gap but proved to not be enough.  The Girls open their regular season on Monday Sep 10th vs. Burke Catholic in the Pearl River Tournament.  The girls hope to repeat last year's success vs Burke when they won 2-1 in the tourney finals.
